COFFEE MAKERS

In 1773, the Continental Congress declared coffee the official national beverage.  In 1607, Captain John Smith founded Jamestown and it’s believed that he introduced coffee to North America.  Coffee has a long history dating back to the year 575 with the Arabs.  The Christian church denounced coffee as “the hellish black brew” so I guess they didn’t have any coffee makers.  However, Pope Clement VIII loved coffee, so he actually  baptized it and made it a Christian beverage so that the “infidels” wouldn’t have exclusive use of it.  So they did have some form of coffee makers!  Today’s coffee maker is a kitchen appliance used to brew coffee without boiling water.  Coffee as we know it came along at the end of the 15^th century.  Various types of coffee makers have been used down through the ages.  The two-level coffee maker originated in France and was called a vacuum coffee maker..  Vacuum coffee makers produced a clear brew.  This type coffee maker was in use right up to the mid 1900’s and was very popular.

The first percolating coffee maker was from Massachusetts in 1865.  Boiling water, vacuum coffee makers, piston pump coffee makers, percolating coffee makers, coffee pots, and today’s drip coffee makers have all been an evolution.  From the beginning, coffee pots were all being designed trying to trap the floating grinds.  Undoubtedly, cloth filters were used in many locations, but no evidence of a commercial device to do that is evident.  Then came the innovation which started off coffee maker development.  Someone poured hot water through a sock filled with coffee grinds and that became a common way to try to brew coffee.  Eventually, hemp was used instead of an old sock.
