FOOD PROCESSORS The food processor was developed in the early 1970’s. In 1973, the first home food processor was introduced in North America. Food processor means an appliance used to facilitate various repetitive tasks in the preparation of food. Food processors are almost always motor-driven. Food processors are similar to blenders in many ways. The primary difference is that food processors use swappable blades and disks instead of a fixed blade. Also, the food processor’s bowls are wider and shorter, a more appropriate shape for the solid or semi-solid foods usually placed into food processors. Little or no liquid is required in the operation of the food processor. A blender requires some amount of liquid to move the particles around its blade. Food processors’ functions normally consist of slicing or chopping vegetables, and grinding items such as nuts, meat or dried fruit. Food processors shred or grate cheese or vegetables and can also puree, and mix and knead dough. Cutting blades are attached to the shaft near the bottom of the bowl on a food processor. Shredding or slicing disks can be attached to spin near the top of the bowl. A lid with a feed tube is then fitted onto the bowl of the food processor. This feed tube allows you to add ingredients while you are chopping, grinding or pureeing. It is fitted with a “pusher” which is sized to slide through the feed tube, protecting your fingers. Modern home food processors have many safety devices built into its design. In a food processor, you can chop or slice most fresh food and enjoy the benefits of keeping the nutrients in the food. That’s much better than buying them already processed in the stores. You don’t know what all they put in them as “preservatives.” Food processors are used extensively in modern kitchens. You can make cole slaw that is delightful, slice ingredients for your salad, and do the chopping of all the ingredients you use in cooking every day. I see them used on cooking shows all the time. What you can do with your food processor is limited only by your imagination. If you don’t have a food processor, shop with us and find one at a very competitive price.
