WHY DO WE EAT WAFFLES?A waffle is a batter cake cooked between two hot plates called a waffle iron. It has a distinctive grid-like appearance, the result of raised partitions on the waffle iron.Did you know that waffles have been around since the late Middle Ages? Waffle irons have been through quite an evolution from two metal plates at that time to the waffle irons of today. Thomas Jefferson brought a waffle iron to the United States from France in the 1790’s, and waffle parties were a common form of entertainment at that time. The first waffle iron was patented in 1869. In 1953, frozen waffles were sold in supermarkets for the first time, and how the divorce rate has climbed since then! There are many varieties of waffle irons today. There are actually “Waffle Days” in the United States, August 24, and International Waffle Day on March 25. National Waffle Day celebrates the patent of the waffle iron. Since earliest times of history, it was considered that you couldn’t have a happy marriage without a waffle iron, especially on Sunday mornings. When you go to a divorce yard sale and don’t see a waffle iron, that’s proof enough for me. Just buy a box of waffle mix and a good bottle of syrup, and don’t forget the coffee. Our favorite waffle iron waffle is the Belgian waffle, all nice and crisp.
